Dětství
Avril Lavigne se narodila v Belleville v Ontariu v Kanadě francouzským rodičům – Johnovi a Judy. Judy říká, že si Avrilina hudebního nadání všimla poprvé, když byly Avril tri roky a zpívala s ní písně z kostela. Když jí bylo pět, přestěhovali se do města Napanee.
V roce 1998 vyhrála soutěž a možnost zazpívat si s Shaniou Twain na jejím prvním velkém turné. Vystoupila na jejím koncertě v Ottawě a zazpívala píseň „What Made You Say That“?
Brzy si ji všimnul manažer Cliff Fabri, když zpívala coververze country písní v knihkupectví v Kingstone v Ontariu. Při vystoupení v Lennox Community Theatre si Avril všiml místní folkový zpěvák Steve Medd (příbuzný vlivného kanadského novináře, Bena Medda), který ji pozval, aby si s ním zazpívala v jeho písni "Touch the Sky" z alba Quinte Spirit, které vyšlo v roce 1999. Také si zazpívala v jeho písních "Temple of Life" a "Two Rivers" na jeho dalším albu z roku 2000, My Window to You.
V 16 podepsala smlouvu s Kenem Krongardem z Arista Records, který pozval šéfa firmy Antonia "L.A." Reida, aby si ji poslechl v New York City ve studiu producenta Peter Zizza. Zalíbila se mu a začala pracovat na svém prvním albu.

Avril se zapojila do charity jako „Make Some Noise,Amnesty International“, „Camp Will-A-Way“, „Music Clearing Minefields“, „US Campaign for Burma“, „Make-A-Wish Foundation“ a „War Child“.
Osobní život
Říkalo se, že je Avril vegetariánka. Nedávno však v jednom interview řekla, že už se za vegetariánku označovat nebude „pro případ, že by ji někdo přistihl jak jí maso“.
Jako teenager chodila v Napanee do restaurace La Pizzeria. V dokumentu Under My Skin Bonez Documentary řekla, že pizza s olivami je jejím oblíbeným jídlem, avšak moc ji nejí, protože pizza není dobrá pro její hlas. V této restauraci její oblíbená pizza dostala jméno podle Avril a také je tam návštěvní kniha pro fanoušky, kteří jí tam mohou napsat své vzkazy a Avril si jí vždycky vyzvedne, když je na návštěvě u rodiny.
Avril má vytetovanou hvězdu na levém zápěstí. Stejnou má i její kamarád a spolupracovník Ben Moody. Na konci roku 2004 si nechala na pravé zápěstí vytetovat malé růžové srdce s písmenem D – což má být první písmeno jejího manžela Derycka Whibleyho, se kterým si koupili dům v Beverly Hills.
Lavigne byla spojována se svým bývalým kytaristou Evan Taubenfeld, i když s ním ve skutečnosti nikdy nechodila. Avšak Evan ji stále považuje za „Nejdražší přítelkyni na světě“, jak řekl na svých oficiálních stránkách. V jednom rozhovoru pro časopis J-14 řekla, že svou první pusu dostala ve 14 letech. V časopise M z roku 2003 byl článek o tom, že bývalý přítel Avril prodává její milostné dopisy na eBay.
V únoru 2004 začala Avril chodit s Deryckem Whibleym, hlavním zpěvákem skupiny Sum 41. 27. června 2005 se zasnoubili. Deryck požádal Avril o ruku při výletu do Benátek.
Vzali se v sobotu 15. července 2006 v kalifornském pobřežním městě Montecito. Ceremoniál začal v 5 hodin odpoledne a trval 20 minut] Avril na sobě měla šaty od návhrářky Very Wang a Deryck oblek od Huga Bosse. Svatby se zúčastnilo asi 110 hostů. Jako jejich svatební píseň si zvolili „Iris“ od skupiny The Goo Goo Dolls.
V září 2009 se po 6,5 letech rozcházejí. Manželský pár jako z pohádky vydržel 3 roky.
Herectví
Avril si odbyla filmový debut v animovaném filmu Za plotem. Spolu s ní na něm pracovali William Shatner, Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Wanda Sykes, Nick Nolte a Steve Carell. Zahrála si ve filmu The Flock a jejím dalším projektem byl film Fast Food Nation, který je založený na její oblíbené knížce. Avril napsala a nazpívala píseň "Keep Holding On" s Dr. Lukem pro film Eragon.
