Dětství
Avril Lavigne se narodila v Belleville v Ontariu v Kanadě francouzským rodičům – Johnovi a Judy. Judy říká, že si Avrilina hudebního nadání všimla poprvé, když byly Avril tri roky a zpívala s ní písně z kostela. Když jí bylo pět, přestěhovali se do města Napanee.

Avril má vytetovanou hvězdu na levém zápěstí. Stejnou má i její kamarád a spolupracovník Ben Moody. Na konci roku 2004 si nechala na pravé zápěstí vytetovat malé růžové srdce s písmenem D – což má být první písmeno jejího manžela Derycka Whibleyho, se kterým si koupili dům v Beverly Hills.
Lavigne byla spojována se svým bývalým kytaristou Evan Taubenfeld, i když s ním ve skutečnosti nikdy nechodila. Avšak Evan ji stále považuje za „Nejdražší přítelkyni na světě“, jak řekl na svých oficiálních stránkách. V jednom rozhovoru pro časopis J-14 řekla, že svou první pusu dostala ve 14 letech.
